Excessive blow-by and crankcase pressure
Some blow-by is normal on a working diesel, especially at higher mileage. Excessive crankcase pressure is different. If the breather is pushing heavy smoke, oil mist, or pressure hard enough to affect seals and gaskets, worn rings, damaged cylinder liners, or piston damage may be behind it.
A proper crankcase pressure test gives the shop real numbers instead of guesses. High blow-by paired with oil consumption, hard starting, or low power is a strong warning that the engine's internal condition is declining. Replacing a few external parts will not restore worn cylinders or lost ring seal.
High oil consumption or oil contaminated with coolant
A truck that suddenly needs oil between normal service intervals needs attention. External leaks should be checked first, including the turbocharger, oil cooler, valve cover, front cover, and rear main area. They can also signal low compression caused by worn liners, damaged pistons, broken rings, or valve damage.
Before pricing an engine, verify the basics. Check fault codes, fuel pressure, injector performance, turbo operation, charge-air plumbing, EGR operation, and exhaust restrictions. If those systems check out and compression or cylinder leak-down results are poor, internal engine work is likely unavoidable.
Metal in the oil or a deep internal knock
Metal in the oil filter is one of the clearest signs to stop and diagnose before more damage occurs. Fine material can come from normal wear, but visible flakes, copper-colored bearing material, or magnetic debris need immediate attention. A deep knock that changes with RPM or load can point to rod bearing, main bearing, wrist pin, or piston failure.
Do not assume a knock is an injector issue without testing. Running an engine with bearing damage can turn a repairable crankshaft problem into a destroyed block, damaged cam, failed turbo, and contaminated oil system.
